The light of humanity was shining bright on September 5th, in Bremerhaven (Germany). Storm lanterns (containing l.e.d. candles ) were placed on reutilized wooden ship planks (symbolizing boats or rafts) and people had the chance to leave their messages of peace on small notes. ---- After we asked them to, many people came and filled pages with well-wishes and their sorrows. --- Amongst others, I approached an older couple and asked if they too would like to write a message on a note. The man simply said, " I can think of just one word: Horror" I said: "Then write it down" --- What followed is what he told me - with tears in his eyes - that he is simply horrified that humankind has not learned anything.That the images on t.v. are the reemerging images of his childhood: Flashbacks of him, his mother and his three siblings fleeing. And that his little brother died of exposure while on the run. That they were not welcome with the farmers where they had been placed. That they were freezing and starving. That the farmer spilled milk onto the ground, into the sand before their very eyes. In the village, they were segregated --- That's why he cannot understand that so many people who have experienced similar trauma can be so cold-hearted towards refugees. And, there were tears rolling down his face. --I told him that I was very sorry and that I didn't mean to make him sad or upset. Afterall, they came to Bremerhaven to spend a nice weekend together. --- "No" he said to me "it's not your fault!". He took my hand, pressed it firmly and walked through the door, beside his crying wife to proceed outside...
